Animal Rigger Pro

Release notes

What is in Animal Rigger Pro 0.1.0, and what is known not to work yet.

Add-on 0.1.0 · Blender 5.1 or newer

0.1.0

The first release. Blender 5.1 or newer.

Setup

  • Mesh check before you mark: holes, doubled points, loose pieces, an old rig, a mirrored side, and a pose that is not standing. Most problems come with a button that fixes them.
  • Species list with 13 animals, each with its usual proportions. The feet, Paws or Hooves, follow the species.
  • The animal's facing, size and floor are read from the mesh. No need to move, scale or rotate it first.

Mark

  • One list of joints, with a picture of where each one is, that moves on by itself after each click.
  • Both sides match: mark one side and the other copies itself. Turn it off per group for a bent or scanned animal.
  • Knees and ankles guessed from the joints around them and the species' proportions.
  • Left, Right, Front and Top view buttons named for the animal's own sides.
  • Face marks on the skin, in two head close-ups, with the eyes found from separate eyeball objects.
  • Hoof marks: fetlock, heel, toe and the two edges of the sole.
  • Tail points: up to four marks along a tail that sags or curls. The tail's bones follow them.
  • Every mark checked against the species while you work, with plain words in Problems.

Generate

  • Legs with IK and FK, foot roll, bank, toe break, toe curl and toe spread, toes and dewclaws on paws, and a real pastern and fetlock on hooves.
  • Spine, neck, head and tail with stretch, stiffness, follow and curl sliders.
  • Face features, each optional: jaw, ears, eyes, eyelids, muzzle, lips, tongue and face details.
  • Twist and Joint helpers for smooth twists and firm shoulders and hips.
  • Parent spaces on the feet, the knees and elbows, and the ankles and wrists, which switch without moving.
  • Skin bound in the same step, in a few seconds on any size of mesh, with a Robust bind for difficult meshes.
  • Rebuild that keeps animation, painted weights, settings and anything you added. Preview changes first, and Undo last build after.

Weights

  • Paint set up for the rig: bone search, a jump to the other side, four brushes, one-click weights, exact weights on selected points, and Copy to other side.
  • Test poses that play while you paint.
  • Quick fixes: Smooth, From other side, Auto weights, Clean up, and Find problems.

Animate

  • Control sets you show and hide in one click, coloured by side.
  • IK / FK per leg or all legs, with no jump, from the sidebar or the right-click menu, and a keyed switch that leaves the frames before it alone.
  • Pose tools: select, key and reset, and an I key that keys every setting.
  • Snap to ground for the feet.

Export

  • Unreal, Unity (Generic) and glTF, with the bent bones turned into plain ones, animation baked, and optional root motion.
  • Bone names for Blender, Unreal, Rigify or Mixamo.
  • A Godot skeleton profile with every glTF file.

Scripting

  • Everything in the sidebar is also in the Python api module. See Scripting.

Known limits

  • Tested on macOS only. Windows and Linux are expected to work.
  • Four-legged animals with paws or a single hoof only. No two-legged animals, bears, split hooves, beaks or trunks.
  • No physics, such as fur or jiggle.
