Save and load
Keep your marks in a file, and put them back on the same animal or a new version of it.
The marks live on the mesh, inside your .blend file. Save your Blender file and they are saved too. You do not need a separate file for everyday work.
A marks file is for when you want them outside the .blend:
- to put the marks on a new version of the same model, such as a cleaned-up mesh or a lower-detail copy,
- to start again from a known good set of marks,
- to keep a copy before a big change.
Save
Select the animal's mesh.
On Setup, open Save and load and press Save.
Pick a folder and a name, such as dog.arig.json, and press Save Animal Definition.
The file holds every mark, the species, the feet, and the features you turned on. It is plain text (JSON), so it is small and safe to keep with your project.
Load
Select the mesh you want to mark and press Start rigging this animal on Setup, if you have not yet.
Open Save and load and press Load.
Pick the file.
Load replaces the marks on the selected mesh. It does not add to them. Then go to Mark to check them, and build on Generate.
Which mesh it fits
The marks are stored against the mesh's own shape, not the scene. So they fit:
- the same mesh in another file, wherever it stands and however it is turned or scaled;
- a new version of the same model, as long as it has the same shape, size and pose.
On a different animal, or the same one in a new pose, the marks land in the wrong places. Mark it fresh instead. Every mark can be dragged after loading, so a file that is close is still a good start.
From a script
The same files load and save from Python. See Scripting.
